The Borough of Bellevue is approximately one square mile and home to roughly 9100 residents.
We are a unique community with a large residential district that includes single family homes
and over 60 apartment buildings, a business district, three schools, a major hospital and a
railway that runs parallel to Route 65.
Back in 1894 the Borough of Bellevue passed an ordinance to create the Bellevue Fire Department. A fire chief was hired to create a volunteer fire company and oversee all operations of the fire department. Eventually the fire department hired two drivers whose job it was to drive and operate the fire apparatus and when necessary perform firefighting duties. These drivers were also responsible for maintaining the fire apparatus. Today the fire department consists of three Lieutenants who in addition to driving and operating fire apparatus and fighting fires also perform vehicle and rope rescues as well as conduct commercial fire inspections and preplan high target hazard buildings. The firefighters work shift work consisting of 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. On February 1, 2000 the fire department became part of the International Association of Fire Fighters as Local 4014. Since joining the union the department has participated in helping collect donations for MDA with the fill the boot campaign. The department has also worked with the North Hills Community Outreach to collect toys for underprivileged children so that these wonderful kids would have presents to open on Christmas morning. The fire department works side by side with the Columbia Hose Hook and Ladder Company No.1, a volunteer fire company comprised of over 20 volunteers. Together the fire department and the volunteer fire company provide the fire suppression and rescue functions for the borough as Station 108, assigned by the County of Allegheny. The Fire department responds to over 300 fire calls each year. The fire department provides mutual aid into several other communities including the Boroughs of Avalon, Ben Avon, and Emsworth as well as several Ross Township fire districts. |
